Conceptually, I am drawn to overgrown sites of the abandoned excesses of industy; discarded wood, iron, rubber and oil slowly dragged down by woody tendrils into the poisoned earth. I imagine what phantom energy resides within this wreckage - reverberations left over from a lifetime of industrial toil, agitated viscosity and- incidentally- animated dance. I ruminate what strange new elements are created when the ghosts of mechanical carcasses and the punished, industrialized soil are wedded; what tales are shared upon their union, what new seeds lie in wait, and what of their fruit.
What would it look like, the subterranean world in which this "chthonic mechanisma" resides? What would be the features of this lurid plane nourishing these two dark- yet half-lit, whimsical life forces? Ribbons of color and energy interwoven and shimmering in the darkness; organic, mechanical and self-aware, but tainted by a beautiful poison; a reflection of both an enslaved, brutal past and a hopeful, life-affirming, fertile future....
Technique: The process evolves over time, with each piece going through a series of transformations, traversing mediums from charcoal drawings to paintings, and digital layering to printmaking. For each finished piece there is an archived body of the elements used along the path of development. |
